Confronted by police trying to arrest him for allegedly selling illegal cigarettes, Eric Garner raised both hands in the air and, with passive defiance, told the officers not to touch him. Seconds later, the officer behind him grabbed the 350-pound man in a chokehold and pulled him to the sidewalk, rolling him onto his stomach. "I can't breathe! I can't breathe!" Garner said repeatedly, his cries muffled into the pavement. A video of the Thursday skirmish shows the Staten Island man lying on the ground motionless after the incident. According to CNN affiliate WCBS, an asthmatic Garner was later declared dead at a nearby hospital. Police said he suffered a heart attack and died en route to the hospital.
Chris Hadfield will not rest until he is cooler than us all. The social-media-savvy astronaut just released an album, titled Space Sessions: Songs From a Tin Can, which he recorded entirely from outer space. Hadfield told Canada AM he hopes the record will help people "feel a little bit more what it's like to live on a spaceship". Hadfield's album has a folksy lean, full of space-themed lyrics.

Get ready to get hit right in the childhood, because it looks like your '90s all-time faves are joining forces. Apparently The Backstreet Boys and The Spice Girls are in the talks for a joint tour. “The Spice Girls tour has been this idea bouncing around for the past year and a half, and it’s something we’re still talking about,” said Backstreet Boy A.J. McLean in an interview with Rolling Stone. So, OK, there's still a lot of groundwork to be laid before this possibly actually comes to fruition, but it would be a match made in heaven because you could EASILY match up your favorite Spice Girl to your favorite Backstreet Boy — especially if they were on tour.
It had been 22 years since the Toronto Blue Jays last made the MLB postseason, a fact oft repeated by the blue-and-white clad masses outside Rogers Centre on Thursday. For a fanbase that has witnessed two decades of middling mediocrity, and a city starved for a championship of any kind, Game 1 of the American League Division Series was clearly a very big deal. But was it worth the wait? Eh. Despite having trade-deadline dandy David Price on the mound and an offense that scored nearly 900 runs during the regular season, the Blue Jays scuffled in their first playoff outing since Joe Carter's walk-off winner in Game 6 of the 1993 World Series, losing the ALDS opener 5-3 to the Texas Rangers. For an announced crowd of 49,834 – plenty of folks probably called in sick to catch the Thursday matinee – that result was surprising.
The U.S. Treasury is seeking information from Toyota about how ISIS has gotten hold of the automaker's trucks, which have been shown in the terror group's propaganda videos. In a statement, Toyota said it is part of a broader U.S. Treasury inquiry looking more closely at how international supply chains and capital flow into the Middle East. Toyota spokesman Ed Lewis said the company is, "supporting the U.S. Treasury Department's broader inquiry into international supply chains and the flow of capital and goods in the Middle East."
