Nigeria and Algeria made World Cup history for Africa and now leave with their heads held high. After putting up great resistance, Africa's last representatives were sent home on Monday by France and Germany. With exceptional saves, goalkeepers again starred both in France's 2-0 win over Nigeria and in Germany's 2-1 marathon against an Algerian team whose bravura and feistiness has been among the many revelations of this surprise-packed tournament.
Nearly two decades after Indonesia's military was squeezed out of civilian affairs with the downfall of strongman leader Suharto, President Joko Widodo is drawing the army more closely into his wars on drugs, terrorism, and corruption. Palace and military officials say Widodo's move is partly designed to counterbalance senior police officers who have crossed swords with him and who, critics say, are trying to undermine the agency leading the campaign against graft. The police acknowledges "problems" in its relationship with the Corruption Eradication Commission, but says it is working with the agency to tackle graft.

The 68th annual Cannes Film Festival has come to a close, and this year's winners were announced on Sunday. Jacques Audiard’s Dheepan surprised everyone by taking home the Palme d’Or, Cannes' top prize. Dheepan portrays the lives of a pseudo-family of Sri Lankan refugees living in Paris. Its win was unexpected, as reactions to the film were less than enthusiastic at Cannes. However, jury co-presidents Ethan and Joel Coen reportedly defended the decision at a press conference after the ceremony.
Record rainfall was wreaking havoc across a swath of the U.S. Midwest on Sunday, causing flash floods in normally dry riverbeds, spawning tornadoes and forcing at least 2,000 people to flee. Tornados struck, severely damaging an apartment complex in Houston, Texas. A firefighter in Oklahoma was swept to his death while trying to rescue 10 people in high water. And the body of a man was recovered from a flooded area along the Blanco River, which rose 26 feet in just one hour and left piles of wreckage 20 feet high, authorities in Texas said.
