Intelligence officials are concerned about a new al-Qaida effort to create a bomb that would go undetected through airport security, a counterterrorism official said Wednesday, prompting the U.S. to call for tighter security measures at some foreign airports. The counterterrorism official, who would not be named because he was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly, declined to describe the kind of information that triggered this warning. But officials in the past have raised concerns about non-metallic explosives being surgically implanted inside a traveler's body, designed to be undetectable in pat-downs or metal detectors. American intelligence has picked up indications that bomb makers from al-Qaida's Yemen affiliate have traveled to Syria to link up with the al-Qaida affiliate there. The groups are working to perfect an explosive device that could foil airport security, according to the counterterrorism official.
Bruce Jenner came out as transgender during an interview with ABC's Diane Sawyer on Friday, leaving Hollywood abuzz. "For all intents and purposes, I am a woman," the former Olympic gold-medal winner said during the 20/20 segment. "My whole life has been getting me ready for this." A number of his family members shared their thoughts on Twitter following the sit-down. Stepdaughter Kim Kardashian wrote that Jenner's "honesty has opened the doors for others to be courageous and live an authentic life," while ex-wife Kris Jenner tweeted: "Not only was I able to call him my husband for 25 years and father of my children, I am now able to call him my hero."
Dave Chappelle proved even comedic geniuses have off nights ... because hundreds of angry fans are demanding refunds after a Detroit performance many are calling a drunken catastrophe. According to multiple people in the crowd during Thursday night's 9:30 show at the Fillmore ... a seemingly wasted Chappelle took the stage an hour late (mostly due to the crowd still being seated), and told very few jokes. Instead, he sat quietly smoking, rambling, and slurring his speech.
At least eight people are dead and others missing, following an avalanche on Mount Everest prompted by a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake in nearby Kathmandu, Saturday. In Nepal, at least 688 people are confirmed dead in total, according to local police, with other deaths reported in neighbouring countries. As night fell on the region, the death toll was expected to rise. Climbers took to Twitter to say that the Khumbu Icefall route to Everest's summit had collapsed.
Distraction can be a good thing for learning under the right circumstances—namely when you will be tested or have to perform under similarly distracting contexts. Psychologists know that the things we learn in one context might not be remembered in another. The researchers trained 48 people to hit a computer-screen target using a wonky touch pad—tracing up, for example, might move the cursor diagonally—and later evaluated them on their ability to quickly hit the mark. During both training and the test, participants were randomly selected to do a distracting second task: counting letters on a screen. Those distracted during just one phase performed poorly when tested, but those who had done the letter-counting task during both training and testing performed just as well as those who had trained and been tested without distractions, according to the results published in February in Psychological Science.
Islamist insurgents including al-Qaeda's wing in Syria Nusra Front seized the strategic northwestern Syrian town of Jisr al-Shughour on Saturday, for the first time in the four year conflict. Syrian state media said the army had redeployed to the town's surroundings "to avoid civilian casualties". Opposition fighters and the Syrian Observatory for Human rights said that the town was now totally controlled by the insurgents.
