Two US citizens infected by the Ebola virus in West Africa will be evacuated back to the United States to be cared for in strict isolation in the coming days. "The safety and security of US citizens is our paramount concern," deputy spokeswoman Marie Harf said, confirming the State Department was facilitating the medical evacuation with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "Every precaution is being taken to move the patients safely and securely, to provide critical care en route on a non-commercial aircraft and to maintain strict isolation upon arrival in the United States."
A Christian legal firm will fight in court Tuesday for a Christian baker in a case that could be the next big Supreme Court decision on gay rights. The Alliance Defending Freedom is representing a Christian cake maker against the American Civil Liberties Union and a gay couple during oral arguments before the Colorado Court of Appeals Tuesday. Jack Phillips has been living his passion of baking cakes for more than 40 years and has owned his own bakery, now called Masterpiece Cakeshop, for more than 20 years. He doesn’t bake cakes for Halloween and doesn’t open on Sundays out of religious conviction. Charlie Craig and David Mullins came to the Masterpiece Cakeshop in July 2012 and asked for a cake for their same-sex wedding ceremony. Phillips declined, citing his religious conviction. Craig and Mullins then filed a complaint and teamed up with the ACLU to take on Phillips and his cake shop.
According to his publicist, Jerry Weintraub, the high-powered Hollywood mogul whose career included promoting Elvis Presley concerts, producing the "Ocean's" movies and spinning larger-than-life tales, has died at 77. His publicist, Michelle Bega, Weintraub died in Santa Barbara of cardiac arrest. Among the friends mourning his death was former President George H.W. Bush, a longtime Weintraub pal. Bush tweeted, "Barbara and I mourn the passing of our close and wonderfully irrepressible friend, Jerry Weintraub," calling him an "American original."
The South Carolina Senate gave final approval Tuesday to a bill removing the Confederate flag from a pole in front of the Statehouse, sending the proposal to the House, where it faces a less certain future. The banner at the Capitol came under greater scrutiny over the last few weeks after authorities said a gunman, motivated by racial hatred, opened fire inside a black church June 17, killing nine people.
Dylann Roof, the suspect in last month's massacre at an African-American church in Charleston, South Carolina, has been indicted by a grand jury on nine counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder, the prosecutor said on Tuesday. Roof, a 21-year-old white man linked to racist views, is charged in the June 17 shooting rampage at the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, where nine black people were killed.
Newly released documents show Department of Justice officials, IRS and FBI officials were discussing prosecuting nonprofit organizations for allegedly engaging in illegal political activity. An official “DOJ Recap” document obtained by the group Judicial Watch details an Oct. 8, 2010 meeting where the administration employees including lois lerner discussed “several possible theories to bring criminal charges under FEC law” against groups “posing” as tax exempt nonprofits. In a memo from IRS Exempt Organizations Tax Law Specialist Siri Buller to top IRS officials, section attorneys were concerned that certain tax exempt nonprofits were actually political committees acting as if they were not subject to FEC law. The memo continues that these groups may be subject to criminal liability.
