Two US citizens infected by the Ebola virus in West Africa will be evacuated back to the United States to be cared for in strict isolation in the coming days. "The safety and security of US citizens is our paramount concern," deputy spokeswoman Marie Harf said, confirming the State Department was facilitating the medical evacuation with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "Every precaution is being taken to move the patients safely and securely, to provide critical care en route on a non-commercial aircraft and to maintain strict isolation upon arrival in the United States."
According to a spokesman, Pope Francis and Cuban President Raul Castro will meet privately on Sunday four months before the pontiff's trip to the Caribbean island, his first as leader of the Catholic Church. Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said on Tuesday Castro's meeting with the first Latin American pope was strictly private and not an official state visit. Francis leveraged the Vatican's ties to Cuba and the United States, writing letters to both Castro and President Barack Obama, to help foster December's historic announcement of the resumption of diplomatic relations between the former foes. The Vatican said last month Francis -- on the invitation of the Cuban government and the Cuban Roman Catholic Church -- would go to the predominantly Catholic island in September, before making a previously announced visit to the United States.
The Kardashians and Sears are parting ways ... TMZ has learned, and sources connected with the family say they're bailing because they believe the department store is a sinking ship. The Kardashians and Sears struck a big deal back in 2011 for the Kardashian Kollection, which features all sorts of apparel and jewelry. By all accounts, the venture was successful. In 2013 the Kardashian fashion empire raked in $600 million and the family got a $30 million cut. TMZ reports the deal ended earlier this year and the store has been selling off the remaining items, and recently the store has been pulling the items from the shelves.
There are big plans for Rio de Janeiro's Guanabara Bay for the 2016 Summer Olympics, where the sailing events will take place. But with a year and a half until the games, criticism is falling on planners and authorities for not taking the necessary steps to clean up the notoriously polluted bay. That's why André Correa, Brazil's environmental secretary, jumped into the bay on live TV on Globo's Fantástico, a week after the program reported on the extent of water pollution in Rio. Critics are concerned polluted water could be harmful to Olympians health, and floating trash could interfere with the competition. The International Sailing Federation has warned that the sailing regattas of the Olympics could be moved, perhaps to the open ocean, but the government has said the sailing course can avoid the worst pollution in the bay.
President Barack Obama on Tuesday hailed the intelligence and combat experience of Gen. Joe Dunford, the Marine he has nominated to become the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the nation’s top uniformed military leader. Obama said at a White House ceremony, “I know Joe. I trust him. He’s already proven his ability to give his unvarnished military advice based on his experience on the ground.” Dunford is the commandant of the Marine Corps and previously served as top commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan. He and the president worked closely to plot the planned American military withdrawal from Afghanistan, which enabled Obama to proclaim the formal “end” of combat operations there at the beginning of this year. That work left Obama “extraordinarily impressed” by Dunford, the president said Tuesday.
Leave it to Derek Hough to land a perfect score even when he's injured! Derek, his celeb dancer Nastia Liukin and trio partner Sasha Farber received a perfect 40 from the judges for their jive on Dancing With the Stars', with the injured Derek inventively finding a way to be a part of the routine without fully dancing. Impressive, right? But ever so gracious, Derek, who is recovering from two torn ligaments in his ankle and a broken toe, downplayed his role, telling E! News' Maria Menounos, "I wouldn't call it dancing. I would call it stepping cautiously!"
