Crossing borders is a part of life in El Paso in far West Texas, where people may walk into Mexico to visit family or commute to New Mexico for work. But getting an abortion doesn't require leaving town. That could change if a federal judge upholds new Texas rules that would ban abortions at 18 clinics starting Sept. 1, including only one that offers the procedure in El Paso, where one of the toughest anti-abortion laws in the U.S.
Death threats to academics in Bangladesh, including the junior home minister, are fuelling a climate of fear following the killings this year of three online critics of religious nationalism in the Muslim-majority nation. Militants have targeted secularist writers in Bangladesh in recent years, as the government has tried to crack down on hardline Islamist groups that seek to make the South Asian nation of 160 million a sharia-based state.
England and Sunderland footballer Adam Johnson has appeared in court to deny charges of sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl. The 27-year-old pleaded not guilty at Durham Crown Court, to three counts of sexual activity with a child under 16 and another of grooming. The winger, from Castle Eden, County Durham, was arrested in March. Born in Sunderland, he began his career at Middlesbrough before moving to Manchester City and then Sunderland. The three counts of sexual activity relate to a single night in January, at two locations in County Durham, while the grooming offence was said to have happened between December and February.
Clint Eastwood is to direct a film about Chelsey 'Sully' Sullenberger, the pilot who famously crash-landed a plane in New York's Hudson River in 2009. All 155 people on board the US Airways flight survived, with the incident dubbed the "Miracle on the Hudson". Warner Bros. confirmed Eastwood would direct and produce the drama, which will be based on Captain Sullenberger's own memoir. Eastwood's last film American Sniper was his biggest box-office hit to date. The film, starring Bradley Cooper as Navy Seal Chris Kyle, took $543.4m globally and was the biggest movie of 2014 in the US.
Glastonbury Festival is, pretty much, the most fun you can have in the UK. An extended carnival of music, dance, theatre, comedy, food, lifelong memories and unparalleled people watching, it blows most other festivals out of the water. Aside from the obvious, what's worth your time this year? You could re-live the weekend several times over and have a different experience every time, but here are a few ideas for navigating the event. Friday head east to the Healing Field and Green Futures regions, a network of small, quiet and chilled out fields where massages are given out under wind chimes and the food is organic, mostly vegetarian, and perfect to set you up for several days in the field. There's some excellent heritage rock and indie lined up for mid-evening Saturday, but your best bet is probably to head to the Pyramid Stage for Pharrell Williams at 8 p.m. to get a good spot ahead of Kanye West's headline slot at 10:15 p.m.. Sunday night promises The Chemical Brothers, Donovan, Franz Ferdinand with Sparks and Buzzcocks among others but the ones to watch are The Who
