French riot police clashed Tuesday with striking train workers, who hurled bottles and blocked traffic in anger over a bill to reform the state-run railway system. A weeklong strike by rail workers has caused some of the worst disruption to the country's rail network in years — and is heating up as the reform bill goes to the lower house of Parliament for debate Tuesday. The bill would pave the way to opening up the railways to competition, and opponents fear it will lead to job losses and safety problems.
There's bad news for you adrenaline-fueled shoppers—the ones who live for the early wake-up call on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Same for you, Cyber Monday bargain hunters, with your trigger finger on the mouse: your favorite shopping days of the year will soon be obsolete. Soon the build-up to one or two big bargain days for consumers will be over. Retailers will no longer rely on one weekend that pushes them into the black. The era of the big one-size-fits-all sale is coming to an end because the latest operations tech is making it possible for stores to give you what you want at the price you want any day of the year. And this is good news for stores and shoppers both. Consumers can expect to receive the best possible price on a given product at a given time, while retailers can offer any product at the right competitive price to meet their business needs. In a sense, every day will be Black Friday, but without all the hype and obstacles.
President Obama said Wednesday that the government is taking "every possible step" to keep Americans safe from terrorism. But new video is raising questions about whether that's the case at the nation's airports. New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport is used by more than 50 million passengers a every year. But NBC News' cameras captured employees simply swiping their electronic key cards to get into the facility this week. Passengers, airline crew, and employees who work in the terminal undergo ID checks, bag checks, walk through metal detectors, and get scanned for explosive materials. Ramp agents, however, do not. Some say that is cause for concern — especially amid worries that an airport insider could have been involved in the bombing of a Russian Metrojet over Egypt three weeks ago.
The National Bar Association wants Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy and Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez to lose their jobs. According to Mashable, the call came after Chicago released video on Tuesday of former police officer Jason Van Dyke fatally shooting 17-year-old Laquan McDonald. The city had tried to keep the video under wraps since Van Dyke killed McDonald in October, 2014. Alvarez announced first-degree murder charges for Van Dyke on Tuesday, but many think the charges and the video's release came far too late. In a statement released Wednesday, National Bar Association President Benjamin Crump wrote, “It is unacceptable that it took over a year to file these charges against Officer Van Dyke."
n">Pandora Media Inc presented its listeners with British singer Adele's best-selling album "25", days after streaming companies said the album would not be available for streaming at release. The album has already broken first-week sales record held by NSync's 2000 album "No Strings Attached," which opened with 2.4 million copies.
Prime Minister David Cameron said on Thursday it was time to join air strikes against Islamic State in Syria because Britain cannot "subcontract its security to other countries". Many Britons are wary of entering into another war in the Middle East after Western intervention in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya failed to bring stability to the region and some believe led to the rise of militants groups such as Islamic State.
