Taylor Swift is famous for pouring her feelings into her music, but the singer-who-wears-her-heart-on-her-sleeve had to set her emotions aside for her latest movie role. The 24-year-old pop star plays a woman with no emotions in the upcoming flick The Giver, in which she appears alongside an all-star cast that includes Meryl Streep, Katie Holmes, Alexander Skarsgård and Jeff Bridges. And considering we're used to a candid Swift who isn't afraid to be open with her fans, the part was definitely a challenge for the "I Knew You Were Trouble" singer.
Barack Obama formally unveiled his administration's ramped-up plan to cut carbon emissions from power plants and declared climate change the greatest threat facing the world. Speaking to a friendly crowd at the White House a few months before international climate talks in Paris, Obama said the world may not be able to reverse global warming if aggressive action to stop it is not taken. He said, 'There is such a thing as being too late when it comes to climate change.'
Former college football broadcaster Craig James filed suit on Monday in Dallas saying he was fired from his job by Fox Sports Southwest due to his stated opposition to same-sex marriage. In the suit, James alleges he was terminated over remarks he made against gay marriage during a political debate when he ran for U.S. Senate in 2012. James said in the 2012 political debate that gays and lesbians would have "to answer to the Lord for their actions."
Subway is speaking out amid the latest allegations against Jared Fogle. Business Insider claims the FBI has subpoenaed an affidavit detailing alleged texts been the chain's former spokesperson and a former female Subway franchisee, in which Jared reportedly says he paid for sex with a 16-year-old. "About the most recent news story on Jared Fogle, this allegation, if true, is appalling and is contrary to the values of our brand, Subway wrote on its Facebook page. "As previously stated, we have suspended our relationship with Jared."
Amid the frenzy surrounding Cecil the Lion's death last week, Idaho huntress Sabrina Corgatelli is speaking publicly about her love for hunting. During an interview with Today's Carson Daly, Corgatelli took arguably the more controversial side of the debate. She pondered in responding to Daly, "everything I've done here is legal, so how can you fault somebody because of their hobbies?" Corgatelli also defended herself after social media users called her a "cold-hearted" killer after she posted photos of her hunting giraffes and wildebeests. She added, "there is a connection with the animal, and just because we hunt them doesn't mean we don't have a respect for them."
Puerto Rico has now officially defaulted on its debts, and no one knows what the consequences are going to be. We do know that the Commonwealth is not allowed to seek any kind of bankruptcy protection to shield its assets from its creditors despite the fact that Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said just last week that if Puerto Rico had to somehow try to struggle through without being able to file for bankruptcy, the results would likely be chaotic, protracted, and costly both for Puerto Rico and more broadly for the United States. So, if you thought Puerto Rico’s economic plight was bad yesterday, brace yourself, it got much worse today. The island’s government has given up its last chance to get itself out of this mess. Now, it’s all in the hands of heartless bondholders.
