A free Slurpee may no longer be enough to make folks stop, so 7-Eleven plans to boost its odds of luring tech-savvy consumers into the store for its 87th birthday celebration. Sure, again this year the chain will give away millions of free 12-oz. Slurpees on its birthday on Friday, July 11th. But the convenience store giant will expand its freebie celebration into the following week by handing out everything from free ice cream bars to free cookies to free Big Gulps -- if you've downloaded its app.
Islamic State has claimed responsibility for a car bomb that exploded in the Yemeni capital Sanaa overnight. Medics said the bomb wounded at least 28 people gathered to mourn another attack earlier this month. In a new sign that three months of war in Yemen was escalating, the country's military spokesman said its forces had launched a Scud missile at a Saudi military base on Tuesday.
Iran and six world powers ramped up negotiations on Tuesday after accepting they would miss a June 30 deadline for a nuclear deal, with both sides cautioning that major obstacles to a lasting agreement remained. Diplomats said the Vienna talks would run on for as long as necessary to reach a deal intended to promise an end to sanctions in exchange for at least a decade of limits on Iran's most sensitive nuclear activities.
An Indonesian air force transport plane crashed Tuesday into a residential neighborhood in the country's third-largest city of Medan, killing at least 20 people. Indonesian television broadcast images of the wreckage of the downed Hercules C-130, a crumpled burning car and a shattered building that local media said contained a spa. Smoke billowed from the site and several thousand people milled nearby. Adam Malik hospital spokeswoman Sairi M. Saragih said the hospital has received 20 bodies so far. She said two people from the neighborhood were critically injured. The crash of the transport plane occurred just two minutes after it took off from Soewondo air force base. Air force chief Air Marshall Agus Supriatna said the pilot told the control tower that the plane needed to turn back because of engine trouble. Supriatna said, "The plane crashed while it was turning right to return to the airport." He said There were 17 military personnel on the plane.
Back in April 2003, Apple reinvented the music industry with the introduction of the iTunes Music Store. Although the iTunes Store wasn't the first attempt at selling licensed music online, it was far and away the best platform — mostly because of the broad participation of the music labels, but also because of Apple's seamless end-to-end ecosystem based around the iPod. In the first year, Apple customers bought more than 70 million tracks. Within five years, iTunes had eclipsed Walmart to be the largest music retailer in the world. Twelve years later, Apple is hoping to reinvent the music industry again — this time with its new Apple Music subscription streaming service. But things are different this time: Apple Music is entering an already-crowded streaming market at a time when the music industry feels more in flux than ever.
Uber passengers in Istanbul have a whole new way to travel between continents: Speed boats. The service, called UberBOAT, will ferry passengers across the Bosphorus river, which divides the Asian and European sides of the city. Uber says the boats will ferry passengers along several popular routes and fares will be calculated based on distance traveled. UberBOAT, which comes one year after the company first brought its ride-hailing service to Istanbul, is not the first time the company has offered a water taxi service. The company introduced a version of UberBOAT in Boston last summer, though it's offering in Istanbul is the first permanent boat service.
