Congressional investigators say the Internal Revenue Service has lost more emails connected to the tea party investigation. The IRS said last Friday it had lost an untold number of emails when Lois Lerner's computer crashed in 2011. Lerner used to head the division that handles applications for tax-exempt status. Among them was Nikole Flax, who was chief of staff to Lerner's boss, then-deputy commissioner Steven Miller. Miller later became acting IRS commissioner, but was forced to resign last year after the agency acknowledged that agents had improperly scrutinized tea party and other conservative groups when they applied for tax-exempt status.
A Massachusetts police officer who sent a Boston suburb into lockdown earlier this week after reporting that an unknown assailant shot at his patrol cruiser will face criminal charges for allegedly making up the whole thing. The officer, 24-year-old Bryan Johnson of the Millis Police Department allegedly called a dispatcher on Wednesday to say a white man in a maroon truck had opened fire on him, causing him to crash the sport-utility vehicle, which erupted in flames. Officers said in a statement that Millis was scheduled to begin training to become a full-time officer in coming weeks.
According to a report by The Information, Google has plans to reenter China and give Chinese mobile users access to its Google Play app store as early as this fall. However, the Chinese version of Google Play won’t make media companies a whole lot of money. To appease censors, Google is planning not to sell any digital media through the store. That’s despite the fact that Google’s Android operating system is extremely popular in the region. In fact, Android-based phones from both Xiaomi and Huawei outsold Apple’s iPhone in China during the second quarter of 2015.
While the U.S. economy added fewer jobs than expected in August, Friday's employment report will likely prompt the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates at its meeting later this month, a spot survey of economists by NBC News shows. Andrew Chamberlain, chief economist at Glassdoor said,"I think today's report gives Fed policymakers the reassurance they were looking for.The recent stock market volatility and the cracks in the Chinese economy have not yet shown up in the labor market." Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital, agreed, noting that data showing wages finally beginning to creep up would be an important factor in the Fed's decision. He said, "I think there's enough evidence in this report that should mean a change in monetary policy."
Jessie James Decker and husband Eric Decker have welcomed their second child together, a healthy and handsome baby boy. Eric said on Twitter on Friday, "Thanks for all well wishes! Mama and baby boy are doing great!! Vivi is the sweetest big sister!" Jessie had this week posted some pretty impressive baby bump photos on her Instagram page. On Thursday, she had posted a photo of herself lying on a hospital bed with her hubby by her side, signaling that she had gone into labor. The couple's newest arrival is extra exciting for Eric who has expressed his enthusiasm at raising a son. The couple is also proud parents to a daughter named Vivianne Rose, who just turned 17 months in the middle of August.
Elias Lindholm has agreed to a two-year contract extension worth $5.4 million with the Carolina Hurricanes. He will make $2.5 million in 2016-17 and then $2.9 million during the 2017-18 campaign. Lindholm, who was the fifth overall pick in 2013, showed plenty of promise last season while recording 17 goals and 39 points in 81 games. "We expect he will be a very important part of the Hurricanes as he continues to develop as a professional," GM Ron Francis said after the signing.
