Mayor Eric Garcetti proposed Monday that the city gradually raise the minimum wage to $13.25 by 2017, up from the current $9 an hour. The proposal, which would make Los Angeles' wage law among the highest in the nation, needs City Council approval to become law. Garcetti unveiled his plan at a Labor Day gathering at Martin Luther King Jr. Park in South Los Angeles with a coalition of business, labor, community and religious leaders. He wants to raise the minimum wage in the city to $10.25 in 2015, $11.75 in 2016 and $13.25 in 2017, an amount the mayor said would enable workers to live above the poverty level. Currently, Los Angeles is covered by California's state minimum wage of $9 an hour. Under the plan, future increases would be tied to the Consumer Price Index for urban wage earners.
A pair of small explosions just 20 minutes and a few miles apart shocked congregants at two churches in southern New Mexico. There were no injuries or deaths from the blasts Sunday morning in Las Cruces. The Las Cruces Sun-News reports the first explosive device went off at about 8:20 am in a mailbox near Calvary Baptist. The next blast came from a trash can outside Holy Cross Catholic at about 8:40 am. Several agencies including the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and New Mexico State Police are assisting with the investigation.
A person of interest in the fatal shooting of a Memphis police officer was in custody on Sunday afternoon, police told NBC News. Authorities did not immediately identify the person in custody. Officials said, the slain officer, 33-year-old Sean Bolton, was shot multiple times during a traffic stop in southeast Memphis on Saturday evening.
The leader of Yemen's Houthis urged his militia on Sunday to fight on against Yemen's Gulf Arab-backed government, dismissing its recapture of Aden last month as a 'limited' achievement made possible by Ramadan. In a speech live on television apparently aimed at shoring up the morale of his men, Abdel-Malek al-Houthi accused his foes of resorting to alliances with both the Islamic State militant group and Israel in their assault on the southern port city.
Now there are two: On Sunday, Zimbabwe accused a gynecological oncologist from Pennsylvania of illegally killing a lion in April. This incident adds to the outcry over a Minnesota dentist the African government wants to extradite for killing a well-known lion named Cecil in early July. Zimbabwe's National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority accused Jan Casimir Seski of Murrysville, Pennsylvania, of shooting the lion with a bow and arrow in April near Zimbabwe's Hwange National Park, without approval, on land where it was not allowed.
Many Americans assumed the Confederate flag was retired for good after governors in South Carolina and Alabama removed it from their statehouses this summer and presidential candidates from both parties declared it too divisive for official display. But people still fly it, and not just in the South, despite announcements by leading flag-makers and retailers that they will no longer sell products showing the secessionist battle flag.
