Japan was bracing for destructive winds and huge waves as a powerful typhoon churned Monday toward the southern islands of Okinawa. The Japan Meteorological Agency said Typhoon Neoguri is expected to reach Okinawa early Tuesday, packing winds up to 250 kilometers (or 154 miles) per hour. It said the storm could be one of the strongest to hit Japan in decades, generating waves up to 14 meters (or 46 feet) high. The agency issued a special warning for violent winds and flood tides. Television reports showed workers in Okinawa tying braces onto palm trees to help minimize damage.
The Secretary of Defense and his top aides made speeches and handed out awards when the department's top auditor announced that the Marine Corps had successfully accounted for all the money it received and spent in 2012, marking a key milestone in the Pentagon's quest to meet a congressionally imposed deadline for becoming fully auditable by 2017. But the self-congratulations turned to embarrassment this March, when the auditors' office suddenly reversed itself and withdrew its endorsement. No one said so at the time, but the Corps had not correctly accounted for roughly $800 million worth of transactions on its books, according to a report the independent Government Accountability Office (GAO) released Tuesday.
Poor Josh Groban. The multi-platinum selling crooner doesn’t seem to have any trouble selling records — he’s widely reported to have sold well above 20 million and as many as 25 million in his career — but he just can’t seem to unload his Malibu estate that was re-listed over the weekend with an asking price of $4.6 million. Current listings describe the architecturally pastiched, circa 1976 residence as a “Tuscan Villa” with four bedrooms and three bathrooms in 3,294-square-feet.
Joe Jackson, patriarch of the Jackson family of musical performers, was discharged on Monday from the Sao Paulo hospital where he had been treated following a stroke. Jackson, who came to Brazil to celebrate his 87th birthday, was diagnosed with a stroke associated with cardiac arrhythmia on July 27, the Albert Einstein hospital said last week. A press representative for the hospital said on Monday that Jackson's health had improved enough to warrant his release. Joe was estranged from Michael - who was one of the world's most successful and best-known performers - before the pop star's 2009 death. He also strayed apart from his wife, Katherine, and many of his other eight children.
The body of Bobbi Kristina Brown was carried by a hearse Monday to her final resting place next to her famous mother. The hearse carrying the 22-year-old daughter of Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown left a funeral home in Newark late Monday morning followed by two SUVs carrying relatives, including cousin Dionne Warwick. Bobbi Kristina died in hospice care July 26, about six months after she was found face-down and unresponsive in a bathtub in her suburban Atlanta townhome. Her death was similar to the way her mother died.
TV director Jace Alexander has resigned from his position as the second vice president of the Directors Guild of America following his July 29 arrest in connection with the possession and file-sharing of child pornography. After a Westchester County DA’s office investigator downloaded child pornography from an IP address in Westchester County, authorities determined that the IP address came from Alexander’s home. Along with directing more than 30 episodes of “Law & Order,” Alexander also worked on “The Blacklist,” “The Practice,” “Rescue Me” and, most recently, “Coop.”
