Harry Potter is back — mysterious, married, and going gray. J.K. Rowling has given fans a glimpse of the grown-up boy wizard in a new story posted Tuesday on her Pottermore website. It's the first update since "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" was published in 2007, but Rowling spokesman Mark Hutchinson said there are "no plans" for a new Potter novel.
An astonishingly tragic year for air travel in Southeast Asia turned worse Sunday when an AirAsia plane carrying 162 people disappeared over stormy Indonesian waters, with no word on its fate despite several hours of searching by air and sea. AirAsia Flight 8501 vanished in airspace possibly thick with dense storm clouds, strong winds and lightning on its way from Surabaya, Indonesia, to Singapore. Searchers had to fight against heavy rain. The Malaysia-based carrier's loss comes on top of the still-unexplained disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 in March and the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 in July over Ukraine. At the Surabaya airport, shocked family members pored over the plane's manifest, crying and embracing when they learned the news. Nearly all the passengers and crew are Indonesians, who are frequent visitors to Singapore, particularly on holidays.
Rabbi Shlomo Riskin, a prominent U.S.-born Israeli rabbi over the weekend compared President Barack Obama to Haman, the notorious villain from the biblical Book of Esther. “The president of the United States is lashing out at Israel just like Haman lashed out at the Jews,” Riskin said according to a Jerusalem Post report on his Saturday night speech at the Jerusalem Great Synagogue. The Post reported that Riskin said he could not comprehend what might be going through Obama’s mind as the president reportedly was set to make steep compromises in a negotiated deal on Iran’s controversial nuclear program. “I’m not making a political statement,” Riskin said according to the Post. “I’m making a Jewish statement.”
Turkish news agencies say that members of a banned leftist group have taken a chief prosecutor hostage in his office inside a court house in Istanbul. Private Dogan news agency says some shots were fired inside. State-run Anadolu Agency and state television, TRT, identified the prosecutor as Mehmet Selim Kiraz. He is the prosecutor investigating the death of a teenager who was hit by a police gas canister fired during nationwide anti-government protests in 2013.
Ex-NBA star Gilbert Arenas is firing back at his estranged fiancee Laura Govan by claiming her $1 MILLION engagement ring was a total knockoff. According to TMZ Sports, Laura is suing Arenas -- claiming he kicked her out of their L.A. mansion and then "forcefully took" her $1 million diamond ring, which she claims he sold. But now, Arenas is finally breaking his silence, and is calling B.S. on Govan.
Ugandan police say they are investigating whether the killing of a prosecutor in Kampala late Monday was carried out by Somalia's Islamic extremist group al-Shabab. Patrick Onyango, a police spokesman in the Ugandan capital, said Tuesday that Joan Kagezi, who had been a prosecutor in the ongoing trial of a dozen men facing terror charges, appears to have been the victim of a targeted assassination.
