Google's annual invite-only developer conference, Google I/O , kicks off on Wednesday with a total of 80 sessions on the agenda. None of those sessions, however, focus on a service that hundreds of millions of people use: Google+. Google's social network, which it often pushes aggressively upon its users, is mysteriously absent from this year's I/O agenda. Last year, there was an entire two-day track at the conference dedicated to Google+, including 15 sessions related to Google+.
US officials conceded Tuesday a man who has spent 13 years in the US prison camp at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, was arrested partly in a case of mistaken identity. During a Guantanamo hearing, officials admitted that Mustafa al-Aziz al-Shamiri, 37, was a low-level Islamist foot soldier and not an al-Qaida courier and trainer as previously thought. Wearing a beard and voluminous white t-shirt, and accompanied by a linguist and two personal representatives, the Yemeni appeared before a panel assessing whether he can be released. A profile published by the Department of Defense maintains he fought in Afghanistan and mixed with members of al-Qaida.
Chris Brown's promoters have announced the performer won't be coming to Australia for his "One Hell of a Nite" tour, scheduled to take place in December. No official reason has been given for the cancellation. In October this year, calls were made from various campaigners to block Brown's visa to travel to Australia on character grounds, citing his past history of violence including his assault against Rihanna. When his tour was first announced, activist group GetUp! started a petition calling for Immigration Minister, Peter Dutton, to block his application.
New Hampshire is beginning to look like Jeb Bush's final stand. Stuck in the middle of the GOP pack he was expected to dominate, Bush is accelerating the time frame for his campaign’s next ad buy in the state. His campaign also announced Tuesday that it is opening four regional field offices in New Hampshire and upping its on-the-ground staff from 12 people to 20. Bush himself has made 60 campaign appearances in the state, but despite those efforts, polls show the former Florida governor remains mired in sixth place in the early state he most needs to win. Now, with the state’s first in the nation primary 10 weeks away, time is running short.
On Tuesday, with encouragement from 150 world leaders ringing in their ears, government negotiators in Paris sought to turn the rhetoric of unity into the text of a global deal to slow climate change. But it became apparent as the leaders departed Paris, that disagreements which have blocked a deal over four years of lead-up negotiations remain unresolved. Negotiators from the 195 countries with a place at the table resumed work on a draft text. It still runs to more than 50 pages and is riddled with sticky issues to be settled. The biggest obstacle is money.
On Wednesday a jury will be seated for the trial of Officer William Porter. He is the first of six Baltimore police officers to stand trial in the death of Freddie Gray. Gray was a 25-year-old black man who died of a spinal injury he suffered in custody. The panel will be chosen from some of the 150 prospective jurors questioned Monday and Tuesday in Baltimore Circuit Court. Court spokeswoman Terri Charles said the jury of 12 people, plus several alternates, will be seated Wednesday, possibly followed by opening statements.
