In February 2009 Jack Dorsey had recently departed from Twitter, which he co-founded. But he was already getting excited about his next idea. When his longtime friend Jim McKelvey lost out on the sale of a $2,000 piece because he was unable to accept credit cards, together they realized that their powerful smartphone devices should be able to process credit cards. So Jack sat down in his apartment with engineer Tristan O’Tierney and drew a series of rough sketches to show how a smartphone credit card app might work. These are the earliest written blueprints for what became Square, a mobile payment system that would enable everybody with something to sell to accept credit cards. The service first became publicly available in October 2010. These drawings are now displayed in Square’s San Francisco offices.
Actress Alyssa Milano is rethinking plans to add a third child to her family amid fears she will encounter health complications as a pregnant woman in her 40s. The former “Charmed” star is mother to 4-year-old son Milo and daughter Elizabella, who turns 1 on Friday, and although she would love to expand her family with husband David Bugliari once more, she worries she may be getting too old. She tells People.com, “I want another one, but I’m 42 so it’s like, ‘Why push my luck?'"
Starsky had Hutch. Hall had Oates. Does Donald Trump have Tom Brady? On Thursday the Republican presidential frontrunner bragged yet again about his friendship with the star NFL quarterback. Speaking at a press conference to announce that he had signed a pledge not to run for the White House as a third-party candidate, Trump described Brady as “a great friend of mine” and said he “just talked to him a little bit ago." On Thursday morning, a federal court overturned a four-game suspension handed to Brady by the NFL over the Deflategate scandal, which concerned allegations that footballs were inappropriately deflated before the Patriots’ AFC championship game victory over the Indianapolis Colts in January. Trump, who went on to insist that Brady was “a very honest person," has often talked about his relationship with the quarterback.
Without Captain America: The First Avenger, there would be no Before We Go. When Chris Evans was offered the role of Steve Rogers in the 2011 Marvel Studios film, he initially turned it down. He relented, of course, and he has reprised his role as the comic book character several times since. Evans said "I love the films that Marvel makes. I'm incredibly proud to be part of them. Like I said, it's opened up a lot of avenues creatively. God...It just goes to show, don't make decisions based on fear." Fear can be motivational, too, and that's part of the reason Evans was excited to make his directorial debut with Before We Go. He shot the film in between Captain America: The Winter Soldier and The Avengers: Age of Ultron, casting himself and Alice Eve in the lead roles. Since its July 21 debut on cable and digital platforms, the romantic dramedy has earned $1.53 million prior to its 15-city domestic opening.
Former Texas police officer VonTrey Jamal Clark has been extradited from Indonesia and charged with capital murder in the fatal shooting of his pregnant girlfriend in Austin. The Austin American-Statesman reported Clark arrived at an Austin airport late Wednesday and was booked into the Bastrop County Jail. Austin media have reported that the Austin Police Department fired Clark in July for insubordination and neglect of duty.
