Republican Sen. Thad Cochran of Mississippi and Democratic Rep. Charles Rangel of New York struggled against younger challengers on Tuesday. In a last-ditch effort, six-term Sen. Cochran reached out to traditionally Democratic voters in his underdog candidacy against tea party-backed state Sen. Chris McDaniel. The 84-year-old Rangel, a 22-term congressman and the third-most-senior member of the House, faced a rematch against state Sen. Adriano Espaillat. Rangel drew criticism last month when he dismissed Espaillat as a candidate whose only accomplishment was to be a Dominican in a majority Latino district.
