In his veto message, Republican governor Chris Christie rejected the idea that limiting the number of bullets that guns can hold will put an end to mass shootings, calling it a "simplistic" and "trivial" approach. The bill would have reduced the legal ammunition capacity from 15 to 10 rounds. In the bill's place, Christie called for a series of reforms to mental illness treatment, including a new standard that would make it easier to commit people involuntarily.
The National Gallery in London has given its clearest indication that Ireland has a moral, if not legal, right to a priceless collection of impressionist paintings that have been a cause célèbre of Irish nationalism since the 1920s. The 39 paintings, including some of the most celebrated works of the French artists Renoir, Monet and Manet, were left to the gallery by the art collector Sir Hugh Lane, who was killed on the Lusitania when it was hit by a German torpedo 100 years ago this month. In a codicil to his will, Lane made it clear that he wanted the paintings to go to Dublin, but because the amendment was unwitnessed the collection stayed in London. After years of campaigning the National Gallery has agreed to a series of compromise deals involving sharing the paintings, while ownership of the best of them remained vested in London. But now the gallery has admitted this may not go far enough, a concession that could open the way for Ireland gaining a greater stake in the paintings when the sharing arrangement ends in 2019.
As Iraqi government forces launch an operation to drive Islamic State out of Anbar province neighbours across the region are growing increasingly nervous. There are fears that Jordan could be the jihadists' next target so it has been redoubling its efforts to confront the extremist threat both on its borders and inside the country. Frank Gardner has been to the Jordan-Iraq border and was granted exclusive access inside a prison to meet a reformed IS convict.
No more wondering when Periscope for Android is coming. The Twitter-owned live streaming app released an Android version on Tuesday, exactly two months after it launched on iOS. It also carries over several touches found in more recent updates, like the ability to hide comments in a broadcast. Periscope for Android comes a few weeks after rival Meerkat arrived on the platform. This is a move that doesn't seem to have hurt its popularity, at least among media.
At least six Hezbollah fighters and 30 jihadists were killed today during clashes in southwestern Syria's Qalamoun region. The clashes are the latest violence in a Hezbollah offensive that began last month. Almost half of the mountains border region has been captured by Hezbollah as part of the three-week-old offensive. The group's operation seeks to eliminate militant threats against nearby Lebanese border communities in the eastern Bekaa Valley. Experts fear the offensive on Syrian soil will further entrench the group in the Civil War of its western neighbor.
Kris Jenner wants a legal lock on the very name that has been sometimes used to disparage her ... momager! TMZ says Jenner has filed legal papers to trademark the name "momager" in the world of entertainment. That means anyone else who wants to use the description would need her permission, or else she could sue them. It looks like she'll get what she wantsr, because Kris has already locked down trademarks for the term "momager" for personal management services and for use in her reality show. Apparently, Kris doesn't like imitators like Dina Lohan and Tina Knowles .
