FIFA President Sepp Blatter's re-election bandwagon is picking up momentum in the city hobbled by a transport strike before it hosts the opening match of the World Cup. Blatter has been collecting standing ovations from his voters, while police in Sao Paulo aim pepper spray on striking workers. Meanwhile, the other president in Brazil — head of state Dilma Rousseff — has decided to stay away from a key FIFA event.
Tens of thousands of people are due to attend an annual candlelight vigil in Hong Kong on Thursday to mark Beijing's Tiananmen Square crackdown in 1989 as tension lingers in the financial hub from its pro-democracy protests last year. More than six months since Hong Kong police demolished the last encampments of protesters agitating for full democracy in the city, the organizers of this year's June 4 vigil are aiming to link the events, which is likely to antagonize China. While referring to last year's Occupy Central protests, city legislator and vigil organizer Lee Cheuk-yan said, "Occupy was in a way a mini-June 4 for Hong Kong. We should not separate our fight for democracy from that of China's. We should link up the two and fight in unity."
According to an interview with Al Jazeera, The head of al Qaeda's Syria wing Nusra Front said he saw no immediate solution to a conflict with the rival Islamic State group in Syria. Hundreds of fighters have died after the groups split in 2013 because of a power struggle between leaders. Nusra Front is loyal to the Osama bin Laden's successors and has to contend with Syrian government forces in addition to ISIS. Both terrorist groups make up the most powerful opponents to the Syrian government. Nusra Front's Abu Mohamad al-Golani said quote We hope they repent to God and return to their senses...if not then there is nothing but fighting between us," It was the second of a two-part interview and included footage of a Nusra training camp, weaponry, a lesson inside a classroom.
When you think "road trip," you probably also think "swarms of bees." The two things practically go hand-in-hand. That's what one driver in Montana seemed to think, anyhow. The Montana Highway Patrol Facebook page reports that a driver in Missoula, Montana was apprehended on May 22 when a highway patrol officer "received a traffic complaint of a vehicle driving all over the road." The person who called in the vehicle claimed that there were bees flying around inside the cab of the car and covering the windows. Once they were pulled over, the driver apparently insisted that the five hives of bees he was toting around were Russian honey bees and therefore harmless. The department wrote on Facebook that "troopers learned, although a very unsafe way to transport bees, that the driver needed no permits to transport the bees through the state." The driver still received a citation for careless driving.
Two Venezuelan opposition politicians on partial hunger-strike in jail are losing weight, but maintaining their demands including the release of fellow imprisoned anti-government activists, their supporters said on Wednesday. Leopoldo Lopez, 44, and Daniel Ceballos, 31, were imprisoned during months of anti-government unrest last year. President Nicolas Maduro calls them criminals who want to unseat him, while their supporters abroad and in Venezuela view them as symbolic political prisoners. Maduro says the jailed pair are responsible for more than 40 deaths resulting from last year's unrest and that he has no plans to order their release.
Ed Sheeran has been slaying stages for his North American stadium tour this summer, and this past weekend he headed to Barclays Center in Brooklyn for yet another sold-out show. This time, he had some ~extra-special~ guests who came out to watch him do his thing: BEYONCÉ AND JAY Z. Sheeran stopped by The Tonight Show Tuesday night and explained the whole crazy situation to Jimmy Fallon. Including the fact that after his show he hung out with the actual Beyoncé and Jay Z.
