Another American doctor working in West Africa has tested positive for the deadly Ebola virus, a missionary group announced on Tuesday. SIM USA, an international Christian mission organization, said the unnamed doctor was treating obstetrics patients at the group’s hospital in Monrovia, Liberia when he felt Ebola symptoms and immediately quarantined himself. The group said the doctor has since been transferred to an Ebola isolation unit and is, “doing well and is in good spirits.” The Charlotte-based group didn’t reveal the doctor’s age or how long he had been working in West Africa. They said specifics on how the doctor contracted the virus haven’t been determined.
The Federal Aviation Administration has signed an agreement to test technology that could locate the operators of small drones that are flying illegally near airports, as the government tries to crack down on near-collisions with manned aircraft. The technology would let the government detect radio signals used to operate drones within a 5-mile radius, which would provide the operator's location, an FAA official told the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee on Wednesday.
Vice President Joe Biden delivered an informal and impassioned immigration speech to a group of Latino leaders in Washington D.C. Biden said at an event hosted by the Latino Victory Project, a bipartisan group working to build political power and representation for the Latino community, “Make no damn apology for anything. We will win simply on the decency of what we’re fighting for." Biden told the group of Latino leaders to straighten their shoulders after sharing a line from Dr. Martin Luther King’s last sermon, referencing the quote “a man can’t ride your back unless it is bent.” Biden went on to say comments made by Republican presidential candidates have left Latinos depressed.
Fox has a taste for more “Bob’s Burgers,” as the network announced Wednesday that it has ordered a seventh and eighth season of the animated series. David Madden, president of entertainment for Fox Broadcasting Company, said, "Six seasons in, the Belchers have become one of America’s most beloved TV families, and we are so happy to keep them in the fold for another two seasons.
Stephen Colbert has had some fun over CNN’s plans to stream a feed of the Oct. 13 presidential debate using virtual-reality technology, but for the network — and the cable news business in general — it’s serious business. Not only is this the first political event to get such you-are-there treatment, it comes as news networks hope to retain unprecedented interest in the 2016 presidential campaign.
Dick Costolo, the former Twitter boss, who stepped down this summer, has been consulting part-time for HBO’s “Silicon Valley” on the story lines for the comedy’s third season. “I’m in the writers room, and it’s more consulting than writing. There’s plenty of writing talent in the room. I’m answering questions and describing how interactions would work between executives, VCs, employees, etc.” Showrunner Mike Judge said the writing team has been bouncing ideas off Costolo to bring a level of authenticity to the show. It’s not totally out of left field: Costolo worked as a standup comedian in Chicago after earning a computer-science degree in 1985. He went on to work for Andersen Consulting, which served as his entree into the digital-media biz.
