Ukraine's Foreign Ministry said on Friday it had protested to Russia over "gross, systematic violations" of Ukrainian airspace and demanded they stop immediately. The ministry said three helicopters bearing the markings of the Russian armed forces had violated Ukrainian airspace several times on July 3. A statement on the ministry's website said, "The Foreign Ministry of Ukraine sent a note to the Russian side protesting over grave, systematic violations of Ukrainian airspace by the Russian side."
According to The Guardian, California Governor Jerry Brown signed into law Friday three bills aimed at bringing order and oversight to California’s medical marijuana industry. The legislation comes nearly 20 years after the state became the first to legalize the drug for medical use. The 70-page Medical Marijuana Regulation and Safety Act was hammered out by lawmakers in the closing hours of the legislative session. Brown's endorsement was expected because his office crafted many of the exhaustive details. The bills create the first statewide licensing and operating rules for pot growers, manufacturers of cannabis-infused products and retail weed outlets. California voters legalized medical marijuana in 1996. A number of groups are trying to get recreational marijuana legalized, as well.
A defamation lawsuit brought against Bill Cosby by three women who say he sexually abused them decades ago can move forward, a federal judge in Massachusetts ruled Friday, delivering a legal blow to the comedian as he attempts to defend himself against accusations of sexual assault by dozens of women. The women claim in their lawsuit that Cosby's representatives damaged their reputations by denying their allegations in sometimes disparaging language. Cosby's lawyers had asked the judge to dismiss their suit, arguing that the remarks were personal opinions protected by the First Amendment and legal declarations made in his defense. But in his ruling Friday, U.S. District Court Judge Mark Mastroianni rejected Cosby's bid to dismiss the case before it ever goes to a jury.
An ambitious U.S initiative to train and equip an anti-ISIS Syrian army was flawed from the beginning and was a fiasco. That's according to a Syrian officer involved in the program, who spoke to NBC News just before Washington announced that it was scrapping the failed program. Captain Ammar Al Wawi was the spokesperson for the first fighters to participate in the troubled "train and equip" program. He said, "There were mistakes committed on both sides. Wrong decisions were made when choosing the leadership and the troops that were trained." Al Wawi is a former Syrian Army officer who defected in the early days of the revolution. He was a member of Division 30--the first contingent of the US-trained forces deployed in Syria.
Samantha Bee did not mince words at her New York Comic Con panel Friday. The Daily Show alum — who's gearing up to host a new late night show on TBS — told moderator Mo Rocca that she saw Vanity Fair's infamous 'titans of late night' photoshoot when she and her husband, fellow comedian Jason Jones, were in a pumpkin patch with their kids. (Fun, Comic Con-friendly fact: Bee and Jones actually met when they were doing a children's theater version of Sailor Moon.
On Oct. 7th, Russian warships in the Caspian Sea fired 26 high-tech cruise missiles at rebel targets in Syria. The targets were a staggering 1,000 miles away. The missiles in question--which the Pentagon calls SS-N-30s--were mostly unknown to the outside world before the raid. Even hawkeyed watchers of the Russian military were surprised to see them. The missile attack was also highly visible. In many ways, it was an announcement to the world that the once-dilapidated Russian navy is back in action. In fact, Putin’s missileers are now among the planet’s most advanced--whether America likes it or not.
