Ukraine's parliament on Wednesday passed a measure offering amnesty to those arrested in two months of protests, but only if demonstrators vacate most of the buildings they occupy. The move was quickly greeted with contempt by the opposition. The measure was put forth by a lawmaker from the party of President Viktor Yanukovych, who is casting about for a way to end the protests, which are calling for his resignation.
The Pope landed in Kenya for his first ever tour of the continent. Pope Francis said on Wednesday he wanted to offer "spiritual and material" support to Africans and seek to heal Christian-Muslim divisions. The Pontiff will travel also to Uganda, another nation targeted by Islamist militant attacks, and the Central African Republic, a country torn apart by Muslim-Christian strife. He told reporters on the flight to Nairobi, "I am going with joy to Kenya, Uganda and the brothers of the Central African Republic. Let's hope this trip brings better fruit, both spiritual and material." Millions of Christians - Catholics and others - are expected to turn out for public celebrations of Mass, presenting a challenge for national security forces to keep the pontiff and the huge crowds safe. .
Rosie O'Donnell isn't mincing words when it comes to Donald Trump's presidential campaign. O'Donnell, a former co-host of The View, was asked about Trump on Monday while discussing a guest starring role on Wednesday's episode of Fox's drama series Empire. She said of Trump's campaign, "It's a nightmare. That's my quote." The animosity between Trump and O'Donnell dates back years. In 2006, O'Donnell criticized him for remarks he made about a winner of his Miss USA beauty pageant, saying he had no right to be a "moral compass" for the beauty queen. That unleashed a series of barbs from Trump, who called O'Donnell a "loser" and "slob," among other insults. In turn, O'Donnell questioned his business skills and hairstyle and compared him to a "snake oil salesman."
Because “everybody’s their own cop in a way", Donald Trump told supporters in South Carolina on Tuesday that they should call the police on neighbors they may find suspicious. Addressing a crowd of thousands who had turned out to listen to a man who says he wants to surveil mosques and bring back waterboarding, Trump said of preventing terrorism, “We know if there’s something going on, report them. Most likely you’ll be wrong, but that’s OK.”
Take any major American city, and the odds are rent prices are accelerating there. But not in downtown Seattle, where rents increased just 3.9% year-over-year in September, compared with 8.4% a year earlier. The reason is simple economics: According to Marc Stiles of the Puget Sound Business Journal, more than 11,000 new units are expected to open this year there, with an equal number coming online next year. Stiles adds in his report that 11,000 units are more than enough for Seattle, even though employment growth there is accelerating.
Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear restored voting rights to more than 100,000 ex-felons in his state on Tuesday. The governor signed an executive order that will allow ex-felons convicted of nonviolent offenses to submit a form that would lead to re-enfranchisement. Beshear believes it does not make sense for a non violent offender to not have voting rights for this is a democracy and not only the privledged should vote. The Brennan Center for Justice estimates that as many as 170,000 residents of Kentucky will be affected by the order, with as many as 140,000 immediately eligible to re-apply for enfranchisement.
