Authorities said Ukrainian armed forces on Tuesday launched a "special operation" against militiamen in the country's Russian speaking east recapturing a military airfield from pro-Moscow separatists. Gunfire could be heard from the airfield at the town of Kramatorsk after a fighter jet swooped low over the area. Ukrainian troops were seen disembarking from helicopters. A Reuters correspondent in Kramatorsk saw four military helicopters over the airport. Two of these landed and when troops stepped out and walked across the field, locals manning a barricade shouted "Shame! Go back home!"
Norway said on Sunday it has sought an explanation from Moscow for a visit to a Norwegian island by Russia's deputy prime minister, who is banned from Norway in keeping with international sanctions against him over Ukraine. Dmitry Rogozin is among a group of Russians who had sanctions imposed on them by the European Union and the United States after Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine last year.
Nothing was settled, but a few things were clearer after the big Republican cattle call here this weekend. There’s no clear frontrunner. The fight for the nomination is unusually fluid. And while the Obama administration continues to be deeply loathed on the right, the GOP field is beginning to turn its attention to Hillary Clinton, the presumptive Democratic nominee. Most of the 700 activists who sat patiently through two days of speeches at the conference sponsored by the New Hampshire Republican Party came away impressed by at least a handful of the 19 potential candidates who spoke. Here are six takeaways from the summit: Reports of Chris Christie’s political death are exaggerated. Republicans are eager to contrast themselves with Hillary. The GOP base yearns for fresh faces. Foreign policy was a dominant theme. Common Core is toxic with the GOP base — and Jeb Bush finally realizes it. The governors in the race will portray the senators as Obama-esque.
Voters in Spain's Valencia region, a bastion of conservatism for two decades, are likely to desert Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's party in droves in May's regional election, a poll published on Sunday found, in a taste of nationwide politics to come. The Metroscopia poll showed Rajoy's center-right People's Party would win the Valencia vote but halve its seats to 28 from 55 in 2011, leaving it short of a majority and unlikely to get sufficient backing from rivals to govern again. Two new parties, Podemos (We Can) and Ciudadanos (Citizens), have focused on voter disenchantment over corruption and one-in-four joblessness, and would take 17 seats each, the survey for El Pais showed. The Socialists would win 23 seats, down from 33.
Ten months after taking office, Cabinet ministers in a Palestinian unity government are making a rare visit to the Gaza Strip. The Cabinet ministers, all from the West Bank, are spending the week in Gaza in hopes of wresting more control from the Islamic Hamas movement. Hamas took control of Gaza from the forces of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in 2007. Ihab Bsaiso, the government's spokesman, said Sunday's visit was meant to "break the freeze."
Happy birthday, Kate Hudson! On this her 36th birthday, it's only right to sing praise to the actress' colorful collection of street style wear. C'mon—she's a bonafide boho goddess! Recall her summer-fresh Temperley London jumpsuit with a red geometric print? Or perhaps the better question is how you could forget. In fact, she looks so good in printed jumpsuits that she invested in another version in the form of a show-stopping Diane von Furstenberg number. While she eventually parted ways with the prints (for now), she did sport a sleek draw-string jumpsuit paired with a classic denim jacket and flip flops. For a night out on the town, the How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days star stopped traffic in a quilted black bomber jacket with light-wash skinny jeans and sleek nude pumps. Going from night to day, Kate surprised no one when she stepped out in a casually stunning outfit composed of a loose black top, statement pendant and billowing tie-dyed bottoms. Swoon.
