Britain's biggest union, Unite, said on Monday it is to ballot 5,000 workers for strike action at car manufacturer Ford. in a dispute over job security and pensions. Workers, mainly on the production line at Ford's six sites across Britain, will be asked whether they want to down tools in a bid to seek guarantees from the firm that there will be no more plant closures and that jobs in Britain will be protected. Unite national officer Roger Maddison said staff in Britain had felt the brunt of previous closures, and now wanted safeguards. A spokesman said roughly 300 staff represented by the GMB Union will also be balloted, with the vote due to close on February 7th.
An astonishingly tragic year for air travel in Southeast Asia turned worse Sunday when an AirAsia plane carrying 162 people disappeared over stormy Indonesian waters, with no word on its fate despite several hours of searching by air and sea. AirAsia Flight 8501 vanished in airspace possibly thick with dense storm clouds, strong winds and lightning on its way from Surabaya, Indonesia, to Singapore. Searchers had to fight against heavy rain. The Malaysia-based carrier's loss comes on top of the still-unexplained disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 in March and the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 in July over Ukraine. At the Surabaya airport, shocked family members pored over the plane's manifest, crying and embracing when they learned the news. Nearly all the passengers and crew are Indonesians, who are frequent visitors to Singapore, particularly on holidays.
A prominent Euro-sceptic in German Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative bloc resigned on Tuesday, saying he had come under pressure to back an extension of Greece's bailout, becoming first high-profile German politician to do so. Peter Gauweiler, a senior member of Merkel's Bavarian allies, the Christian Social, and an outspoken critic of aid to Greece, has led efforts to block euro zone bailouts and the European Central Bank's bond-buying program in court. The 65-year-old said in a statement that he was resigning as a vice-chairman of the CSU and also giving up his mandate for the Bundestag lower house of parliament.
Suspected members of an outlawed marxist organization in Turkey have stormed an Istanbul courthouse on Tuesday and taken hostage a prosecutor who was working on the case of Berkin Elvan - a teenager who was killed during an anti-government demonstration in 2013. The kidnappers, who claim to belong to the Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party-Front, have published photos of themselves pointing a gun at the head of Mehmet Selim Kiraz, against the backdrop the organization's flag. According to a statement carried on a site that is close to the group, the perpetrators have given authorities an afternoon ultimatum to meet their demands, including a live confession by the police officers suspected of killing Elvan, and the acquittal of all people being tried for participation in solidarity rallies for the 15-year-old.
There is only one northern white male rhinoceros left on the planet. Its home is in Kenya, at Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Joining Sudan, the male, are two female northern white rhinos. Together, they are three of the last five remaining northern white rhinos in the world. The subspecies are on the verge of extinction, suffering greatly since poaching surged in the 1960s. According to The Guardian, a rhino's horn can sell at prices upward of $75,000 per kilo (2.2 US pounds), leaving them under great threat. So what is the solution? Unfortunately we lost the only other two males in 2014. In an end-of-the-world-like crisis, the future of the subspecies lies on Sudan. A team of conservationists and scientists are turning to artificial fertilization techniques in a desperate attempt to save the species. Sex cell samples will be collected and stored, while scientists run appropriate tests before they can attempt to use a southern white rhino as a surrogate. In the meantime, caretakers and patrol units deployed around the ranges in Africa are doing their best to fight poaching head-on.
Air raids by a Saudi-led coalition again hit Houthi militia targets across Yemen on Monday night, striking the group's northern stronghold of Saadeh, the capital, Sanaa, and the central town of Yarim. A Sanaa resident said, "There were huge blazes in the mountains outside Sanaa. It looks like they hit a missile depot and it was on fire for half an hour or so. Then there was anti-aircraft fire until dawn." The strikes, which began on Thursday, are aimed at stopping the Houthis from taking more territory and pressing them and former president Ali Abdullah Saleh to negotiate a power-sharing deal with President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.
