Box office watchers expected the weekend haul for 'Transformers: Age of Extinction' to be big, but few expected this kind of reception. The Michael Bay film generated $100 million in its debut weekend in North America, the biggest domestic opening of 2014. The Paramount Pictures' reboot dominated overseas too, pulling in more than $300 million worldwide and breaking the record for largest foreign movie release in China, an honor previously held by 'The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug'. The preceding film, 'Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon', the third film in the series, pulled in a total $1.1 billion worldwide when it was released back in 2011. Paramount Pictures is a subsidiary of Viacom.
