Disgraced Canadian Rob Ford reached out to Toronto's favorite son, Justin Bieber Thursday after the pop star was charged with criminal assault. Ford, who's admitted to smoking crack in the past, came to Bieber's defense on D.C.'s 106.7. Ford said, "At 19 years old, I wish I was as successful as he was, He's 19 years old, guys. Think back to when you were 19." According to reports, Bieber allegedly hit a limo driver in the back of the head several times on December 29th after he and his entourage attended a Maple Leafs game. Police were called to the scene and charges were pressed against the 19-year-old.
An astonishingly tragic year for air travel in Southeast Asia turned worse Sunday when an AirAsia plane carrying 162 people disappeared over stormy Indonesian waters, with no word on its fate despite several hours of searching by air and sea. AirAsia Flight 8501 vanished in airspace possibly thick with dense storm clouds, strong winds and lightning on its way from Surabaya, Indonesia, to Singapore. Searchers had to fight against heavy rain. The Malaysia-based carrier's loss comes on top of the still-unexplained disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 in March and the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 in July over Ukraine. At the Surabaya airport, shocked family members pored over the plane's manifest, crying and embracing when they learned the news. Nearly all the passengers and crew are Indonesians, who are frequent visitors to Singapore, particularly on holidays.
British singer George Ezra made his biggest U.S. television appearance to date as the rising folk star performed a pair of his hit singles during the Rock-hosted episode of Saturday Night Live . From Bastille and Sam Smith in Season 39 to Hozier earlier in Season 40, Saturday Night Live has made it a habit in recent years to give emerging talent the prestigious musical guest spot at Studio 8H before the artists become a household name, and Ezra is the latest up-and-comer to carry that torch. Ezra, one of Rolling Stone 's 10 New Artists You Need to Know for January 2015 , discussed his folk influences earlier in the year.
Hugh Jackman's ready to extract his Wolverine claws on screen again...for the final time. The 46-year-old Australian actor posted on his Instagram page on Saturday a photo of himself sporting his X-Men mutant's razor-sharp blades on one hand. "WOLVERINE ...ONE LAST TIME. HJ," he wrote. The actor is likely referring to an upcoming sequel to Marvel's standalone Wolverine films. The most recent, The Wolverine, was released in 2013. The new film, which is still untitled, is set to hit theaters on March 3, 2017.
UK Prime Minister David Cameron is back to drop a few more verses — but this time, he's joined by Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne and UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage. YouTuber Cassetteboy, well known for mashing up politicians' words into rap songs, manipulated Cameron's words yet again into a catchy (but obviously very partisan) tune. This time, the clip was used to bring attention to comedian Russell Brand's upcoming film, The Emperor's New Clothes.
Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi made a diplomatic gaffe during a solidarity march in the nation's capital on Sunday, after he publicly referred to French President François Hollande as “François Mitterand." Both Essebsi and Hollande attended an anti-terror protest in Tunis that reportedly attracted thousands of people. Demonstrators marched toward the Bardo National Museum, the site of a an attack on March 18 that left 22 people dead.
