Marvel’s little-known superhero franchise 'Guardians of the Galaxy’ blew box office expectations out of this world over its opening weekend. The Disney-produced film, which follows the intergalactic adventures of a motley team of extraterrestrials, generated $94 million in ticket sales in the U.S. and Canada in its debut three days. Worldwide box office figures topped $160.4 million. Preliminary forecasts called for around $75 million in the first three days of its domestic release, an optimistic estimate given the film’s focus on a tertiary franchise outside of the sure bets in the Marvel universe such as 'Iron Man'.
