Andy Samberg SNL
Could tacos get any more kick-butt than this?
Andy Samberg will host the season finale of "Saturday Night Live" on May 17. While the "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" star is known for his digital shorts, he also performed some hilarious impressions during his time on "SNL." One of the funniest moments: Watching him play actor Nicolas Cage — alongside the actual Nicolas Cage. In a 2012 airing of the recurring segment "Get in the Cage," Samberg and Cage, dressed alike, explain to then-Weekend Update anchor Seth Meyers that Cage has created a clone to fulfill the star's goal to appear in "every film ever released." But the two have differences. "For example, this Nic is calm and stealthy, like a Ninja warrior," says Samberg of the real Cage. "Whereas this Nic," says Cage of Samberg, "is an exaggerated, screaming psychopath, who really just doesn't exist." On "Late Night With Seth Meyers," Samberg recently admitted that he was nervous when he heard Cage would do the skit, because Samberg played the actor "like a maniac with his head on fire. ... But lovingly, because I've seen every movie he's ever done. And he's the greatest. He's Nic Cage." It was unclear how the star would react. "He showed up cold," Samberg recalled, meaning Cage had not read the script in advance. Samberg added that he didn't know whether Cage had ever seen his impression. "This might be the most insulting thing I've ever done to a person to their face." Meyers remembered attending the reading to see what would happen. "I came for no other reason than just, I thought, like, if Nic Cage attacks Andy, I will immediately run for help," he joked. "So we read through it. ... He didn't laugh," Samberg said. "And at the end he looked up and was like, 'Yah, it's good.'" Victory. "We could not get out of there fast enough," said Samberg, who didn't want to get too giddy in front of the star. "Seth goes skipping down the hall. I've never seen him this excited about anything." Meyers called the Nic Cage appearance the "highlight of my time on the show." Here's hoping Samberg will be game for some more celebrity send-ups on Saturday.
