Down By The River: Greatest of all time on Rolling Stone's 'SNL' list

More We all have our own list of top "Saturday Night Live" skits, and so does Rolling Stone magazine in its new list of the 50 greatest of all time (see rollingstone.com for full list). Its No. 1 is hard to argue with: 1993's Matt Foley, Motivational Speaker, starring the legendary Chris Farley. The screaming, sweating, life force of Farley proved he was the "greatest physical comedian since John Belushi," as Rolling Stone put it. The character is, as Farley explains, 35 years old, divorced, and "living in a van down by the river." The line has lived on, even though Farley died in 1997 at the age of 33. David Spade, who is lectured by Farley in the skit, cannot keep it together. The former cast member recalled that Farley surprised him by hitching and twisting his belt during the sketch. "He saved that for the live performance, and so none of us had ever seen it. He knew that would break me." Who could possibly blame him? See the rest of this playlist for more of the top 10 favorite "SNL" sketches picked by Rolling Stone, including "Buh Weet Sings," "D*ck in a Box," and "White Like Me." – Claudine Zap (@zapkidd) Less
