Fashion house Chanel opted for a relaxed, airy look for its Spring-Summer 2014 haute couture collection, sending its models down the Paris catwalk wearing breezy pastels and tennis shoes. The mood was in stark contrast to its Fall-Winter show last July, whose set evoked a bombed-out theatre. Head designer Karl Lagerfeld said Tuesday's bright white decor was meant to suggest a "nightclub in another galaxy". But despite the labour-intensive, meticulous work by Lagerfeld's "petites mains" -- literally small hands, or haute couture seamstresses -- he said after the show: "You have to have lightness, otherwise haute couture has a somewhat old-fashioned image."
A Massachusetts police officer who sent a Boston suburb into lockdown earlier this week after reporting that an unknown assailant shot at his patrol cruiser will face criminal charges for allegedly making up the whole thing. The officer, 24-year-old Bryan Johnson of the Millis Police Department allegedly called a dispatcher on Wednesday to say a white man in a maroon truck had opened fire on him, causing him to crash the sport-utility vehicle, which erupted in flames. Officers said in a statement that Millis was scheduled to begin training to become a full-time officer in coming weeks.
According to a report by The Information, Google has plans to reenter China and give Chinese mobile users access to its Google Play app store as early as this fall. However, the Chinese version of Google Play won’t make media companies a whole lot of money. To appease censors, Google is planning not to sell any digital media through the store. That’s despite the fact that Google’s Android operating system is extremely popular in the region. In fact, Android-based phones from both Xiaomi and Huawei outsold Apple’s iPhone in China during the second quarter of 2015.
Batman and the Batmobile go hand in hand; over the years, the iconic car has become just as iconic as the Batcave, the Batsuit, or even Caped Crusader himself. Every iteration of Batman has brought its own unique twist to the Batmobile, from the 1960s version, to the 2000s iteration. In introducing Batman to the DC Extended Universe — as well as having him go toe-to-toe with the Man of Steel — in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, director Zack Snyder has created his own version of the famous vehicle — and it is now on display at Warner Bros. Studios in Hollywood, California.
While the U.S. economy added fewer jobs than expected in August, Friday's employment report will likely prompt the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates at its meeting later this month, a spot survey of economists by NBC News shows. Andrew Chamberlain, chief economist at Glassdoor said,"I think today's report gives Fed policymakers the reassurance they were looking for.The recent stock market volatility and the cracks in the Chinese economy have not yet shown up in the labor market." Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital, agreed, noting that data showing wages finally beginning to creep up would be an important factor in the Fed's decision. He said, "I think there's enough evidence in this report that should mean a change in monetary policy."
