Shaun White pulled out of the Olympic slopestyle contest Wednesday after being dinged up on a course that riders are criticizing as unduly harsh. "With the practice runs I have taken, even after course modifications and watching fellow athletes get hurt, the potential risk of injury is a bit too much for me to gamble my other Olympics goals on," White said in a statement. White, who was among the favorites in the new Olympic event, jammed his left wrist during practice Tuesday and when he came off the slopestyle course, he called it "a little intimidating."
Donald Trump is the star of another soccer ad — only this time, it's a U.S. network using his words to pump up America's team. Fox Soccer is running clips from Trump’s speeches touting American strength in a promo ad for the U.S. and Mexico soccer match Oct. “We’re gonna have a little fun tonight. I love the Mexican people. They have amazing spirit.” Trump says in the ad.
A week after a gunman killed nine people and himself at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, President Barack Obama met with survivors and grieving families behind closed doors on Friday. The president said, "I've got very strong feelings about this because when you talk to the families you are reminded this could be your child ... or your mom or your dad or your relative or your friend." Even before the President set foot in Oregon on Friday, news broke of two other campus shootings — leaving one dead and three wounded at Northern Arizona University, as well as one dead in an apartment complex near Texas Southern University. Obama has been clear where he stands on gun control.
According to a recent survey conducted by U.K.'s Voucher Codes Pro, over one-third of those who claim to be vegetarian, in fact, eat meat after getting a little tipsy. Kebab meat and beef burgers were the most popular cheat treat. Nos. 3, 4 and 5? Bacon, fried chicken, and pork sausage respectively. The team surveyed 1,789 people in the UK, all of whom were vegetarians, as part of the study. Another tasty tidbit: 69 percent of those drunk meat-eaters said they don't admit to others when they've slipped up. Sneaky, sneaky!
According to The Guardian, California Governor Jerry Brown signed into law Friday three bills aimed at bringing order and oversight to California’s medical marijuana industry. The legislation comes nearly 20 years after the state became the first to legalize the drug for medical use. The 70-page Medical Marijuana Regulation and Safety Act was hammered out by lawmakers in the closing hours of the legislative session. Brown's endorsement was expected because his office crafted many of the exhaustive details. The bills create the first statewide licensing and operating rules for pot growers, manufacturers of cannabis-infused products and retail weed outlets. California voters legalized medical marijuana in 1996. A number of groups are trying to get recreational marijuana legalized, as well.
A defamation lawsuit brought against Bill Cosby by three women who say he sexually abused them decades ago can move forward, a federal judge in Massachusetts ruled Friday, delivering a legal blow to the comedian as he attempts to defend himself against accusations of sexual assault by dozens of women. The women claim in their lawsuit that Cosby's representatives damaged their reputations by denying their allegations in sometimes disparaging language. Cosby's lawyers had asked the judge to dismiss their suit, arguing that the remarks were personal opinions protected by the First Amendment and legal declarations made in his defense. But in his ruling Friday, U.S. District Court Judge Mark Mastroianni rejected Cosby's bid to dismiss the case before it ever goes to a jury.
