Paint lines have been added to spell out, "Aloha" in some Oahu crosswalks, a tweak first spotted around Christmas. Says resident Ken Middleton, "we started seeing people disrupting traffic, out in the middle of the street with cameras." Middleton's one of many who like the change, which has drivers more aware of pedestrians and also gives a reminder: "Ah, slow down and enjoy a little Aloha." But Ross Sassamura of the Department of Facility Maintenance says it's vandalism, and has to go. The markings are "a national standard and any deviation... creates the potential for drivers not recognizing that is a crosswalk." The fix, he adds, may prove costly for the town.
