Abigail Adams, the 2nd First Lady, fought for gender equality when she wrote a famously bold letter to her husband encouraging him to "remember the ladies" in 1776 while he was serving as the Massachusetts representative to the Continental Congress in Philadelphia. As PBS.org notes, her call came "in an age when women were seen as strictly domestic." John Adams served from 1797-1801. Louisa Adams, the 6th First Lady, was less polite: She mocked her husband by writing satirical plays about him, "parodying his rigidity," as the University of Virginia's Miller Center describes.
