Kneeling in court and swinging a cricket bat at Oscar Pistorius' toilet door, a South African forensic analyst demonstrated Wednesday how the double-amputee athlete may have bashed the door to get to the girlfriend he had just fatally shot. Col. J.G. Vermeulen said he believed Pistorius was on his stumps when he swung his bat at the brown cubicle door. The defense, on cross-examination of the policeman, insisted instead that Pistorius was wearing his prosthetic legs when hitting the door in the pre-dawn hours of Valentine's Day last year — and the marks from the bat on the door were lower down because the athlete swung with a bent back.
According to The Daily Beast, members of al Qaeda’s branch in Syria have a surprising advocate in the corridors of American power: Retired Army general and former CIA Director David Petraeus. The disgraced former commander of U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan has been quietly urging U.S. officials to consider using so-called moderate members of al Qaeda’s Nusra Front to fight ISIS in Syria. That's according to four sources familiar with the conversations, including one person who spoke to Petraeus directly. The heart of the idea stems from Petraeus’ experience in Iraq in 2007. Then, as part of a broader strategy to defeat an Islamist insurgency, the U.S. persuaded Sunni militias to stop fighting with al Qaeda and to work with the American military.
Trainloads of migrants arrived in Austria and Germany from Hungary on Monday, as European Union asylum rules collapsed under the strain of a wave of migration unprecedented in the EU. As thousands of men, women and children - many fleeing Syria's civil war - continued to arrive from the east, authorities let thousands of undocumented people travel on towards Germany, the favored destination for many.
The European Union could soon fund and set up new reception facilities for asylum-seekers in Hungary as it is already doing in Italy and Greece. Saying he would travel to Budapest soon, EU Migration Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos told reporters on Monday that the EU executive was ready to offer further help to the government as it takes in large numbers of people crossing the Balkans to reach the European Union. He added that the EU would, "if necessary, set up a hotspot in Hungary." Already expected to open in the coming weeks in Greece and Italy, these EU "hotspots" are being funded and staffed in part by immigration officers and other experts seconded from other member states. More than 300,000 people have already arrived in Italy and Greece by sea this year.
On Sunday, Benji Madden sent a loving message to his wife, Cameron Diaz , in honor of her 43rd birthday. Benji paired the cute note with an adorable picture of the couple flashing their sweet smiles. The Good Charlotte guitarist wrote"Happy Birthday to my beautiful wife, my best friend and everything else — there's so much I could write. I'm the luckiest guy alive — I get to spend the rest of my life right here. I love this Woman!! Many more Baby!!" Most recently, the two were spotted holding hands when they touched down at LAX from Australia on Monday, and earlier this month, Benji showed off his chivalrous side when he held open the door for Cameron during their cute breakfast date.
The State Department released another tranche of emails from Hillary Clinton’s private server late Monday. The release – which contained 7,000 pages of emails sent and received from 2009-2010, about topics ranging from Middle East policy to a controversial Rolling Stone cover story about American general Stanley McChrystal – is the latest monthly instalment of messages that Clinton turned over to the State Department from her private “homebrew” server. Controversy over the Democratic frontrunner’s use of private email while secretary of state has raged for months after the New York Times first reported in March that Clinton did not even have a government email address. Eventually Clinton turned over approximately half the emails in her personal account to government lawyers while deleting an additional 32,000 messages that she said were personal.
