NSA's Internet Monitoring Said To Be Legal

An independent panel says the National Security Agency's collection of Internet data within the United States passes constitutional muster and employs "reasonable" safeguards designed to protect the rights of Americans. The Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board has largely endorsed a set of NSA surveillance programs that have provoked worldwide controversy since they were revealed last year by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden. However, the board said some aspects of the programs merit new safeguards. In January, the board said a different NSA program — its collection of domestic calling records — "lacked a viable legal foundation" and should be shut down. The board will vote on its new report Wednesday.
When "The Wiz Live!" airs on NBC this Thursday, it will come alive for the blind with a voiced description of the broadcast's sights and action integrated into its soundtrack. Comcast says this will be the first live entertainment program in U.S. history to be accessible in this way to those who are blind. "The Wiz Live!" premieres Thursday at 8 p.m., with stars including Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige, Ne-Yo, Elijah Kelley, Uzo Aduba and Common, as well as Shanice Williams as the young heroine, Dorothy.

An Ohio man accused of taking his 5-year-old son from his mother's house in Alabama in 2002 and living with him under false identities for 13 years pleaded not guilty on Tuesday. He has remained in jail on a $250,000 bond.Julian Hernandez, now 18, had been found in a national database for missing children after he had used an incorrect Social Security number for his college applications. He was unaware that he was kidnapped by his father until his applications. Bobby Hernandez was indicted in late November on 32 charges in Cuyahoga County, including kidnapping, interference with child custody, tampering with records and forgery. Hernandez has been ordered to have no contact with his son.
Volkswagen of America posted its November sales figures Tuesday morning, reporting a 24.72% drop in overall sales compared to November 2014. In total, the company sold 23,882 cars in November 2015, compared to 31,725 cars during the same time last year. VW attributes the sales drop to the stop-sale the carmaker put on its 2.0- and 3.0-liter TDI diesel models, in light of its recent emissions scandal.
