An independent panel says the National Security Agency's collection of Internet data within the United States passes constitutional muster and employs "reasonable" safeguards designed to protect the rights of Americans. The Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board has largely endorsed a set of NSA surveillance programs that have provoked worldwide controversy since they were revealed last year by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden. However, the board said some aspects of the programs merit new safeguards. In January, the board said a different NSA program — its collection of domestic calling records — "lacked a viable legal foundation" and should be shut down. The board will vote on its new report Wednesday.
A top Palestinian intelligence official has provided first details of the release of two Swedish hostages held in Syria for 17 months, saying the captors drove them to a pre-arranged drop-off point, pushed them out of the car and sped off. The official said Sunday that Nusra Front militants in Syria were not paid for the captives. He says Palestinian intelligence entered Syria twice this month — once to obtain mobile phone footage as proof the hostages are alive and again for their release Friday. The Swedish foreign minister noted Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' "crucial role" and also thanked Jordan.
Greenpeace has called on Spain's government to dedicate more resources to cleaning up an oil spill rising up from a sunken fishing trawler off the Canary Islands after spotting a three mile slick. The group said one of its planes had detected "thick oil" covering the ocean just above where the Russian fishing boat Oleg Naydenov sank on April 14, about 15 miles south of the tourist hot-spot of Gran Canaria.
U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki Moon said on Sunday that there is no military solution to migrants drowning in the Mediterranean, as European leaders search for ways to manage the flow of people leaving North Africa in rickety boats. Ban's comments came a week after more than 700 people drowned in the worst shipwreck in decades of dangerous seaborne migration. The disaster has shocked the European Union into pledging more money for rescues. In an interview with Italian newspaper La Stampa, Ban said the United Nations was ready to help tackle the problem. Asked about a proposal by Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi to "capture and destroy" the boats that traffickers use, Ban said the U.N. focused on security and protecting human rights.
The annual White House Correspondents' Dinner is one of the Washington's most bizarre traditions. The event, which has been running just over a century, is nominally supposed to celebrate excellence in reporting on the White House–the use of journalism as a way of speaking truth to power. In recent years, it has been increasingly criticized for becoming a long, self-congratulatory celebration of how awesome everyone in attendance is, complete with an inexplicable red carpet that Tom Brokaw claimed was less dignified than a junior prom–a fitting comparison given the dinner’s "Nerd Prom" moniker. In particular, the dinner is indicative of an uncomfortable closeness between journalists and the politicians they are, in theory, supposed to be capable of criticizing. Still, those interactions are instructive–last night’s event did position a supposedly loosened-up President Obama next to comedians, actors, and pundits.
After Bruce Jenner's much-discussed 20/20 interview on Friday, ex-wife Linda Thompson is sharing her experiences from their time together. The former Olympic champion came out as transgender during his sit-down with Diane Sawyer, and Thompson has penned an essay for the Huffington Post in which she says she had no idea that he identified as a woman until he told her, years after their wedding.
