Kite surfer hit by vehicle after winds blow him onto highway

A kite surfer was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after he was blown onto the Great Highway in San Francisco and then hit by an SUV. San Francisco Police responded to a report of an accident involving a vehicle and a pedestrian around 3:12 p.m. on the Great Highway just south of Sloat Blvd. The kite surfer was getting ready to enter the water when a gust of wind caught his kite and blew him across the beach. He was dragged across the parking lot and then onto the southbound lanes of the highway, where he was then hit by a vehicle, a San Francisco Police Department spokeswoman said. The kite surfer ended up between the SUV and the concrete median barrier. The driver reportedly told authorities he saw the kite before he saw the surfer. Police say the man sustained serious head injuries and was transported to SF General hospital. His condition was not immediately known.
