New York City Mayor Declares State of Emergency

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio issued a state of emergency on January 26, ahead of the predicted blizzard that could bring two feet of snow to the city. He said residents need to recognize it as an emergency and to stay safe inside their homes.

He asked people to stay indoors as quickly as possible, including to get out of work early. Starting at 11 p.m. local time, only emergency vehicles are allowed on city streets until further notice, he said.

City schools will be closed on Tuesday, and exams will be rescheduled, de Blasio said. Credit: YouTube/NYC Mayor’s Office
