Unilever, the company that makes Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, Dove soaps and Vaseline, said Tuesday that it is cutting 7,500 jobs and spinning off its ice cream business to reduce costs and boost profits. London-based Unilever said its ice cream business, which also includes Magnum bars, has “distinct characteristics” from its other brands and would benefit from separate ownership to increase growth. The British consumer goods company with 128,000 employees also said it is launching a “productivity program” that is expected to lead to a reduction of about 7,500 mostly office-based jobs worldwide.
Hungary's new sovereignty law could have "a chilling effect" on free and democratic debate in the country, a panel of constitutional law experts from the Council of Europe, a human rights watchdog, said on Tuesday. Hungary's parliament passed a law in December which the ruling right-wing Fidesz party said would prevent undue interference in national politics by foreign persons or groups. The new law set up an authority, the Sovereignty Protection Office, to explore and monitor risks of political interference.

Former Rankin County sheriff's (RCSO) deputies Brett McAlpin, Christian Dedmon, Hunter Elward, Jeffrey Middleton and Daniel Opdyke, along with Joshua Hartfield, a former Richland police officer, pleaded guilty to a total of 16 federal charges related to the torture and physical abuse of three Rankin County men in two unrelated incidents, according to a statement released by U.S. Department of Justice on Aug. 3, 2023.
