US Military Drops Aid to Trapped Iraqis in Sinjar

The US military made an airdrop of food and water for thousands of Iraqi citizens threatened by Islamic State militants near Sinjar, Iraq, on August 9.

More than 150,000 Yazidi Kurds remained trapped on Sinjar Mountain, having fled after militants seized the town of Sinjar on August 2. Local reports said more than 60 people of the Yazidis faith had died on the mountain as a result of dehydration and starvation.

Tens of thousands of Iraqis, including Arabs, Christians and minority Yazidis, Shabak, Shia Turkmen and others, sought refuge in the mountains after armed IS militants (formerly ISIS or ISIL) took over Sinjar, according to Kurdish officials.

The United Nations and European Union both expressed concern about the situation in Sinjar and other parts of Nineveh province, with the UN calling it a “humanitarian disaster.” Credit: YouTube/US Central Command
