UN Reports Increasing Demand on Bangui's Paediatric Hospital

Bangui’s only paediatric hospital is facing growing demands, according to a report by UNICEF. This video focuses on the story of Alexis, just one of 2.3 million children affected by the Central African Republic’s civil war. UNICEF writes that the conflict between government forces and Seleka rebels has left thousands dead and almost one million people internally displaced since 2012.

“I brought [my son] here in critical condition,” says Grace Subin about Alexis. “He couldn’t even eat. But now after the treatment, he’s starting to eat again and is so much better.”

“Alexis was shot in the jaw during an attack that also killed his father,” UNICEF writes. “He has been receiving treatment in the paediatric hospital in Bangui, but the facility is the only one of its kind in the country.”

UNICEF is supporting the hospital with medication, nutrition and renovations to its surgical theatre. In addition, UNICEF is supplying a new generator, an X-ray machine and constructing a new outpatient unit. Credit: YouTube\UNICEF
