NASA Delays Delta Rocket Launch Amid High Winds

This short timelapse shows the gantry crane that towers over a launchpad at Vandenberg air base in California as it rolls back in preparation for a rocket lift-off. Citing high winds, NASA postponed by a day the planned launch on January 29. The Delta II rocket will carry a new research craft, called SMAP, into orbit. SMAP stands for Soil Moisture Active and Passive and the mission will measure soil moisture and surface freeze/thaw from space.

NASA says information from the mission could help forecast growing conditions, floods and droughts. Credit: YouTube/NASA
