IS Seizes Munitions Supplies Airdropped Into Kobane

Islamic State (IS) seized a munitions pack airdropped by US planes to Kurdish fighters in Kobane, according to footage released by the pro-IS Aamaq News on October 21.

The video shows a fallen parachute of crates, which are opened by an IS fighter, including a box of German-manufactured grenades at 1’41".

Germany provided 10,000 grenades to the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in Iraq in August, according to this German government document. However, these grenades were not part of that consignment, according to Germany’s armed forces, who said it had provided a newer model of grenade than those seen in this video. Military aid from the KRG was airdropped by US C-130 planes, according to an official statement by the US Central Command on October 19.

A US Central Command press release on October 20 said at least one of its resupply bundles went astray, but reported it had been destroyed in a subsequent airstrike preventing the supplies “falling into enemy hands.” Credit: YouTube/A3maq News
