Thousands of Nigerians have fled to Chad after violent clashes between the Nigerian army and Boko Haram broke out in Baga. UNICEF reports that an estimated 13,000 people traveled for 3 to 5 days on foot and by small canoes and fishing boats across Lake Chad to safety. According to the organization:

“Nearly one million people have fled their homes in Nigeria because of the violence rocking the northern parts of the country, while more than 135,000 have sought refuge in Cameroon, Chad and Niger. The overwhelming majority are women and children.”
