Firefight Breaks Out at Ukrainian Checkpoint in Debaltseve

A firefight between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russian separatists broke out at a Ukrainian army checkpoint in Debaltseve, between the cities of Donetsk and Luhansk, on Saturday, January 24. According to reports, Alexander Zakharchenko, prime minister of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, confirmed that militia units had launched an offensive on Mariupol and Debaltseve.

Authorities in Mariupol said at least 30 people were killed when the government-held city in eastern Ukraine was hit by shelling on Saturday. The Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs blamed the attack on pro-Russian separatists fighting in the east of the country, while the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the rocket fire into civilian areas.
