Essebsi Supporters Celebrate Victory in Tunis

Supporters of Tunisia’s Beji Caid Essebsi celebrated in the capital Tunis after Essebsi claimed victory over his opponent, interim President Moncef Marzouki, on Sunday, December 21, in the country’s first free presidential election. Exit polls showed Essebsi won 55.5 percent of the vote. The official result was not confirmed by election officials.

Marzouki has been interim president since a 2011 uprising ousted former leader Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali. In the first round election in November, Essebsi took 39 percent of the vote. This footage is described as showing celebrations in the Tunis city centre, Manouba. Credit: Instagram/henihasni
