US Coast Guard Breaks Ice Ahead of Shipping Season

The US Coast Guard’s ice cutter fleet in the Great Lakes region is working to clear ice from rivers to prepare for shipping season. This video, released on March 27, shows the Coast Guard Cutter Bristol Bay in the St Clair River, which runs on the Canadian and Michigan border.

The Soo Locks, along the St. Marys River, opened on March 25. The Welland Canal, which connects Lake Erie to Lake Ontario, and the St. Lawrence Seaway are expected to open soon, opening the Great Lakes to more shipping. Credit: US Coast Guard
