Protesters Gather Outside Islamabad's Lal Masjid Mosque

Protesters gathered outside the Lal Masjid Mosque in Islamabad on December 18 to call on the mosque’s leaders to denounce the killing of 141 people in an attack by Pakistani Taliban on December 16. According to local reports, up to 300 people gathered for the protest. Local activists said that one of the mosque’s leaders, Maulana Abdul Aziz, failed to condemn the attack and described him as a Taliban sympathizer on social media.

Abdul Aziz was arrested during a 2007 raid on the mosque by the Pakistani army and reportedly voiced his support for Islamic State (formerly ISIS/ISIL) militants in December 2014. Credit: Facebook/Safeer Ullah Khan
