Protesters Carry Coffin Around Chicago City Hall

Protesters carried a coffin around Chicago City Hall on Monday, November 30, in a march organized by the NAACP.

A group of protesters were arrested, including NAACP National President Cornell Brooks. Brooks posted a photo of himself with seminary students in the police wagon after the arrest. The march was to seek justice for Laquan McDonald, who was fatally shot by Chicago Police Officer Jason Van Dyke in October 2014, and demand police reforms.

The protesters chanted “16 shots, stop the cover-up,” referring to the number of times Van Dyke shot McDonald.

McDonald, who was charged with murder last week, appeared in court on Monday. His bond was set at $1.5 million, and it was expected his family would post a $150,000 cash bond. McDonald was charged one day before the city released the dashcam video that shows Van Dyke shooting McDonald.
