Peru Deploys Army Amid 48-Hour Mining Strike

People in Arequipa, Peru, marched for the second day on Thursday, May 28, in protest against the controversial Tia Maria copper mine project. The government deployed army troops to seven southern regions, where demonstrators called for a 48-hour strike from Wednesday.

The strike follows months of violent protests against the open-pit mining project, which locals fear will contaminate their crops. Four people have been killed during clashes between police and protesters over the past two months, according to reports. Credit: YouTube/El Búho
