Massive Sun Eruption Ejects Plume of Solar Material Into Space

This video, released Tuesday by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, is actually a time-lapse over four hours, showing a huge eruption on the side of the sun on June 18. The eruption grew into what NASA called a substantial coronal mass ejection, meaning a giant cloud of material from the sun was blasted into space.

The images are shown in the 304 Angstrom wavelength of extreme ultraviolet light, NASA said, a wavelength that highlights material in the low parts of the sun’s atmosphere. When it appears in images, the material is colored in red. Credit: YouTube/NASA Goddard
