Hundreds of Passengers Await Rescue on Burning Italian Ferry

Hundreds of passengers were trapped on a burning car ferry off Greece on Monday, December 29, as stormy conditions in the Adriatic hampered rescue efforts to evacuate the Italian-registered vessel.

The Norman Atlantic, carrying around 500 passengers, was sailing to Ancona in east Italy from Igoumenitsa, Greece, when it radioed for help after a fire broke out on its lower deck on Sunday, December 28, 44 nautical miles northwest of the Greek island of Corfu.
