Clegg Says Education Cuts Are a 'Red Line' for Lib Dems

Liberal Democrats leader Nick Clegg has said that cuts to education would be a “red line” for his party “in any coalition negotiation” with Labour or the Conservatives. He described it as a “guarantee” to voters that he would oppose cuts to “nurseries, schools, and colleges”.

In the run-up to the 2010 general election, Clegg signed the “Vote for Students” pledge, promising “to vote against any increase in fees in the next parliament”. In December 2010, after forming the coalition government with the Conservatives, Clegg reneged on his promise and voted to increase fees. An apology issued in September 2012 was met with disdain by many students. Credit: Twitter/Nick Clegg
